Companies that want to make themselves more sustainable or expand are increasingly stranded because there is no room on the electricity grid. New connections sometimes take years to arrive. Yet there are ways to make smarter use of energy within the existing grid capacity. Through a simultaneity analysis, we can sometimes find room for a new connection or expansion.    <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ryan Sondij, a data analyst at GreenTrust, deals with this type of analysis on a daily basis. In this interview, he explains what a concurrency analysis is, when we use it and why no two situations are the same.  <br\/> <br\/><strong>Can you briefly share what your role is at GreenTrust?<\/strong> <br\/>&#8216;From my role as a wind specialist at GreenTrust, I&#8217;m increasingly involved in data analytics for customers and, for example, batteries.&#8217; relates Ryan. &#8216;In addition to our regular yield calculations, I also support wind turbine inspections and make concurrency analyses for energy hubs, among other things. The nice thing about this work is that not only technology and data come together here but also practice.&#8217;  <br\/> <br\/><strong>What is a concurrency analysis?<\/strong> <br\/>&#8216;A simultaneity analysis maps the extent to which energy production and energy use fall at the same time. For example, consider a wind or solar park that supplies power to a company or business park. For example, a shared grid connection for wind energy and battery storage, or the direct supply of electricity to new companies that are unable to get a connection because of grid congestion. But we also do this for companies that want to buy green power directly as a sustainability measure.&#8217;  <br\/> <br\/><strong>What does this yield in practice?<\/strong> <br\/>&#8216;With a simultaneity analysis, you can show how much room there is within existing connections,&#8217; Ryan explains. &#8216;For much of the time, we can supply power directly from a wind farm to companies. If the simultaneity is high enough, a company can still expand, despite grid congestion. Ultimately, a simultaneity analysis can contribute to smarter use of the local electricity grid to reduce the burden of national grid congestion.    An additional advantage is that consumers in a partnership with a producer are also less affected by fluctuating and high electricity prices.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can you always fully meet energy demand?<\/strong> <br\/>&#8216;No. Simultaneity is never 100 percent,&#8217; Ryan points out. &#8216;Wind and solar generation are variable. Consumption profiles also vary but are generally predictable and from the past often regide. Because of this combination, you can never always supply all the power directly. Therefore, we look not only at how much energy is generated but also at any flexible space in the energy user&#8217;s consumption profile. With that, we can often increase the simultaneity percentage further.      <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What do you do about times when production and demand don&#8217;t match?<\/strong> <br\/>&#8216;In my view, energy storage is always a good addition and part of the solution. In such an analysis, you look at how much buffer capacity is needed to achieve full simultaneity. Not to fully cover the worst-case scenario, but to cover a large part of the shortfall when production is lower than demand. Also, to ensure full energy availability in a worst-case scenario, we also calculate in many situations whether an emergency supply is needed, such as an emergency generator.&#8217;  <br\/> <br\/><strong>What combinations do you see in practice?<\/strong> <br\/>&#8216;The strength is often in combining different components, such as wind and solar, storage, energy use from buildings or factories, and loading docks for cars or trucks. In practice, this often depends on the local situation. Which parties are in the area? Which parties have a capacity shortage or surplus? And which parties have partnered to form an energy hub or group transmission agreement?     Every project is different, so we provide customization.  <br\/> <br\/><strong>What makes these analyses so interesting?<\/strong> <br\/>&#8216;What&#8217;s cool about these analyses is that a lot of different facets come together. No two analyses are the same; the emphasis is just different each time.&#8217; It really is fun puzzle work, according to Ryan: technical, substantive and practical.
