Why GreenTrust Is Committed to Food Forests<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

On Saturday, September 5, food forests across the Netherlands opened their doors during the National Open Food Forest Day. For GreenTrust, this was a great opportunity to explain why food forestry is becoming an increasingly important focus for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No, we\u2019re not going to put wind turbines among the trees. Our interest stems from a different question: besides clean energy, what else can we do to address the effects of climate change? Can we make a meaningful contribution to nature and a future-proof food supply? That\u2019s why, in the past, we supported the Elderveld food forest with a financial contribution instead of giving the usual Christmas gifts to our business partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clean energy remains our most important work<\/strong> <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At GreenTrust, the focus remains primarily on the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. That\u2019s how we prevent CO2 emissions. But nature is under pressure, and farmers are facing depleted soil, excessive use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, and water shortages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ilse Maas-van Veghel, business developer at GreenTrust: \u201cThe projects we\u2019re working on don\u2019t stand alone.\u201d<\/em> That\u2019s why GreenTrust is also exploring other ways to contribute. Food forests are a good example of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food and Nature<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A food forest does more than just produce food. It removes CO2 from the air, supports a greater variety of plants and animals, and is more drought-resistant than a conventional farm field. And the food it produces is healthy and delicious. Ilse: \u201cIn a healthy ecosystem, everything is interconnected.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food forestry is therefore a good fit for GreenTrust. We already collaborate extensively with farmers, and we know from the energy sector how to get a new project off the ground. That experience is also valuable outside the energy sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ilse Joins the Dutch Food Forestry Foundation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Since July 1, Ilse has been working one day a week at the Dutch Food Forestry Foundation<\/a>. There, she handles the finances and fundraising. The foundation wants farmers to be able to actually make money from a food forest. It works to remove regulatory barriers, shares knowledge, assists with the design and management of food forests, builds a network, and raises awareness about what a food forest is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For GreenTrust, this partnership is a logical step: we bring together expertise from the energy sector, finance, agriculture, and nature restoration. GreenTrust is also exploring whether food forests can be incorporated into its own wind and solar farms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also active at Betuwewind<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, Ilse herself didn\u2019t have time to attend the Open Food Forest Day this year: she was appointed to the supervisory board of Betuwewind<\/a>, with a focus on sustainable agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This ties her work together nicely. Clean energy remains important, but a healthy future requires more than that: attention to soil, water, nature, and agriculture that uses these resources wisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
