Wind Park Krammer
Largest citizens’ Initiative in the Netherlands
Wind Park Krammer is the largest citizens’ initiative in the Netherlands. On and around the Krammer locks, the nearly 5000 members of cooperatives Zeeuwind and Deltawind have developed a wind park with 34 wind turbines. Together, these generate 102 MW, sufficient for over 100,000 households. The electricity is directly purchased by Nouryon, DSM, Google, and Philips.
By and for the region
Wind Park Krammer is unique in many aspects. This starts with its cooperative nature. As an initiative of Zeeuwind and Deltawind, the wind park is truly by and for the region. A Wind Fund has been established to finance sustainable projects in the region. Additionally, a bond loan was issued specifically for members and direct residents.
Technical masterpiece
Furthermore, the location of Wind Park Krammer is unique. It is built on a primary flood defense and surrounded by Natura 2000 areas. This made both development and construction challenging. With the help of, among others, four tower cranes and special sheet pile constructions, the park was built on and around the Krammer locks. The first pile was driven into the ground in 2017. In May 2019, the wind park was officially opened by King Willem-Alexander. Curious about the images of Wind Park Krammer’s creation up to its completion? As (former) director of Wind Park Krammer BV, I had been involved in the project since 2013. I think it’s incredibly impressive that citizens have managed to realize such a large project in such a unique location.
