Battery Storage Egchelse Heide

Energy Landscape in Peel en Maas

At Wind Farm Egchelse Heide, the possibilities for battery storage are being explored. The idea is a storage system with a capacity between 5 and 10 MW. GreenTrust is preparing for a permit application. The initial request has already been submitted.

In the future, we will also guide the procurement process and construction. And when the battery storage is operational, we will take care of its management. The completion date of the project is still unknown.

New technologies for energy generation and storage

In addition to battery storage, we are investigating whether we can use the existing infrastructure even more flexibly with hydrogen and/or heat coupling. The idea is to supply not only electricity but also fuel and heat. This way, we want to develop a kind of energy landscape that can meet local energy needs. And thus provide a solution for grid congestion.

Solution for grid congestion

More and more sustainable energy sources are producing more and more energy. On the other hand, the demand for electricity is also increasing: we are increasingly driving, cooking, and heating electrically. But the production peaks do not always coincide with a peak in demand. As a result, there is sometimes more electricity than the power grid can transport. Or there is more electricity needed than the grid can supply. Strengthening the grid takes time and is complex. In many regions, there is already ‘traffic’ on the network. We call this grid congestion. New sustainable energy initiatives cannot get a connection because of this. But there is also no room on the network for new residential areas, hospitals, or businesses, for example. Battery storage can help reduce grid congestion.

Many new concepts are being developed at Windpark Egchelse Heide. Battery storage is a complex and new subject where changes are constantly taking place. We therefore have to constantly monitor the market and respond to new developments. A lot is changing – also in ideas, standards, and requirements from the government, grid operators, and suppliers. All this makes it super interesting for me. You learn something new every day.

GreenTrust’s Role

Various GreenTrust team members are involved in the development of the battery storage system at Wind Farm Egchelse Heide. For instance, Peter contributed to the development, Christian assisted with the permit process, Lisa provides legal support, and Jeroen is involved as a board member and technical specialist.
