Battery storage Egchelse Heide

Energy landscape in Peel and Maas

Wind park Egchelse Heide is looking at the possibilities for battery storage. The idea is a storage system with a capacity between 5 and 10 MWh. GreenTrust is preparing a permit application. The request in principle has already been submitted.

In the future, we will also supervise the procurement process and construction. And when the battery storage is up and running, we take care of the management. The project’s completion date is still unknown.

New technologies for energy generation and storage

In addition to battery storage, we are exploring whether we can use hydrogen and/or heat coupling to make even more flexible use of existing infrastructure. So the idea is to provide not only power but also fuel and heat. Thus, we want to develop a kind of energy landscape that can meet local energy needs. And thus can be a solution to grid congestion.

Solution to grid congestion

More and more renewable energy sources are providing more and more energy. On the other hand, the demand for electricity is also rising: we will increasingly drive, cook and heat electrically. But production peaks do not always coincide with a spike in demand. As a result, there is sometimes more electricity than the power grid can transmit. Or conversely, more electricity is needed than the grid can provide. Strengthening the grid takes time and is complex. Many regions are already experiencing “congestion” on the network. Net congestion is what we call it. New renewable energy initiatives cannot connect as a result. But there is also no room on the network for new housing developments, hospitals or businesses, for example. Battery storage can help reduce grid congestion.

Many new concepts are being developed at wind park Egchelse Heide. Battery storage is a complex and new subject that is constantly changing. So we have to constantly monitor the market and respond to new developments. A lot is changing – including in ideas, standards and requirements of government, grid operators and suppliers. All this makes it super interesting for me. You learn something new every day.

Role GreenTrust

Several GreenTrusters are working on the development of the battery storage system at wind park Egchelse Heide.. For example, Peter participated in the development and Christian contributed to the permitting process. Lisa provides legal support and Jeroen is involved as a board member and technical specialist.
