Wind Park Eemshaven SE

World first: self-climbing crane

Green Electricity for 14,000 Households

Wind Park Eemshaven Southeast consists of four Lagerwey wind turbines in the north of the Netherlands. The construction of the wind farm started in 2019 with the development of roads, cabling, foundations, and crane platforms. The construction of the four wind turbines followed at the end of 2020. Lagerwey’s self-climbing crane was used for the installation of three wind turbines, while one turbine was built using a conventional crane. The wind farm has been operational since January 2022 and supplies green electricity to about 14,000 households in Groningen.

Curious about how the self-climbing crane works? Watch the footage here.

This was an incredibly beautiful project to work on. It’s the first project where the entire wind turbine was built using a self-climbing crane, which climbs up using a ‘pinning’ system. By choosing this crane, we save in two ways: it reduces the heavy transport of a conventional crane and the space needed to set up such a crane.
