Wind Turbine De Noord

Own Energy for Terheijden

Wind Turbine De Noord is part of Wind Park Zonzeel along the A16. A unique project, as De Noord directly supplies electricity to the village of Terheijden. Through the Traais Energy Collective (TEC), the residents of this village aim to fully meet their own energy needs with locally generated sustainable energy.

Traais electricity and heat

De Noord has been in operation since spring 2023. What’s unique is that the electricity from the wind turbine goes directly via its own cable to the so-called Energy Brewery in Terheijden. From there, the electricity is distributed to the village.

With a capacity of 7 MW, De Noord provides electricity to all 2,500 households and businesses in Terheijden. This is done through the Traaise Energy Company (TREM), the local energy company of the Traais Energy Collective. Part of the electricity is converted into heat for the Traais Heat Network. Sustainable energy from local sources, therefore. Or as the Terheijden residents themselves say: Traais electricity for Traaie.

Wind Turbine De Noord was a primer: it’s the first time we didn’t connect a wind turbine directly to the grid, but combined it with a heat network on one and the same connection. Aligning everything and everyone was quite a challenge!
