Windmill the North

Own energy for Terheijden

Windmill De Noord is part of wind park Zonzeel along the A16 motorway. A unique project, as De Noord supplies electricity directly to the village of Terheijden. Through the Traais Energie Collectief, the residents of this village want to fully meet their own energy needs with locally generated sustainable energy.

Traaise power and heat

The North has been in operation since the spring of 2023. Uniquely, the power from the wind turbine goes directly through its own cable to the so-called Energy Brewery in Terheijden. From there, electricity goes into the village.

With a capacity of 7 MW, De Noord powers all 2,500 households and businesses in Terheijden. This is through the Traaise Energy Company (TREM), the local energy company of the Traais Energy Collective. Some of the power is turned into heat for the Traais Heat Network. In other words, renewable energy from our own sources. Or as the Terheijden people themselves say, Traaise stroom for Traaie.

Role GreenTrust

A number of GreenTrusters are working on this project. Joost supervised the construction of the grid connection and the wind turbine. Team management, with Filippos as team leader, takes care of the management of De Noord.

Windmill de Noord was a first: it is the first time we did not connect a wind turbine directly to the grid, but combined it with a heat grid on the same connection. Getting everything and everyone together was quite a challenge!
