Wind park Nijmegen-Betuwe
Civilian wind park in record time
In a record time of less than four years, residents of Nijmegen and the surrounding area realized Wind park Nijmegen-Betuwe. The wind park, with four wind turbines, has been providing renewable energy for over 7,000 households per year since the end of 2016. Wind park Nijmegen-Betuwe is located on Nijmegen territory, along the A15 highway.
In the hands of citizens
Wind park Nijmegen-Betuwe is almost entirely owned by citizens, united in cooperative WindpowerNijmegen. After a successful recruitment campaign in 2015, 1,013 cooperative members collectively raised more than 2 million euros to make the park a reality. PPM Oost, the investment company of the province of Gelderland, also contributed financially. For their investment, participants receive a good return. And they make an important contribution to making the region more sustainable.
The four Lagerwey wind turbines were built in 2016 and have been generating renewable energy for some 7,000 households since the end of that year. The wind turbines have a tip height of 150 meters and a rotor diameter of 100 meters. The park generates an average of over 23 GWh of electricity per year, which goes to households in the area via Greenchoice.
Sharing cables with solar park
The energy cooperative has not been sitting idle since construction and has built a solar park next to the wind park De Grift. Completed in April 2022, this solar farm will provide some 1,475 households with renewable energy. A special feature is that wind and solar parks use a single grid connection. Cablepooling is called that. The energy park contributes to the municipality of Nijmegen’s goal of being energy neutral by 2045. More information can be found on the website of Windpark Nijmegen-Betuwe.

Wind park Nijmegen-Betuwe was a really fun project to be involved in because we really came up with it with the energy cooperative WPN. We did our best to include everyone from the cooperative in the implementation. By organizing open days and setting up a visitor center. We even postponed hoisting the rotor so that it could be done during an open day…. Pretty unique!
Role GreenTrust
GreenTrust has been involved in several phases of this project. For example, Joost supervised the entire construction and Jeroen and Klaas dealt with the tendering and contracting. Romana worked out the technical design. Filippos is doing the operational management of Wind park Nijmegen-Betuwe.
