Citizen wind park in record time
In a record time of less than four years, residents of Nijmegen and the surrounding area have realized Wind Park Nijmegen-Betuwe. The wind park, with four wind turbines, has been providing sustainable energy for over 7,000 households per year since the end of 2016. Wind Park Nijmegen-Betuwe is located on Nijmegen territory, along the A15 highway.
In the hands of citizens
Wind Park Nijmegen-Betuwe is almost entirely owned by citizens, united in the cooperative WPN (WindpowerNijmegen). After a successful recruitment campaign in 2015, 1,013 cooperative members together raised over 2 million euros to realize the park. PPM Oost, the investment company of the province of Gelderland, also contributed financially. For their investment, the participants receive a good return. And they make an important contribution to making the region more sustainable.
The four Lagerwey wind turbines were built in 2016 and have been supplying sustainable energy for about 7,000 households since the end of that year. The wind turbines have a tip height of 150 meters and a rotor diameter of 100 meters. In total, the park generates 10 MW of electricity, which is directed to households in the area via Greenchoice.
Sharing cables with Solar Park De Grift
The energy cooperative has not been idle since construction and has realized a solar park next to the wind farm; De Grift. This solar park was completed in April 2022 and provides sustainable energy to about 1,475 households. What’s special is that the wind and solar parks use a single grid connection. This is called cable pooling. The energy park contributes to the municipality of Nijmegen’s goal to be energy neutral by 2045. Wind Park Nijmegen-Betuwe was a very enjoyable project to be involved in, because we really conceived it together with the energy cooperative WPN. We did our best to involve everyone from the cooperative in the implementation. By organizing open days and setting up a visitor center. We even postponed the hoisting of the rotor so that it could happen during an open day… Quite unique!

GreenTrust is bij verschillende fases van dit project betrokken geweest. Zo heeft Joost de bouw helemaal begeleid en hebben Jeroen en Klaas zich bezig gehouden met de aanbesteding en contractering. Romana heeft het technisch ontwerp uitgewerkt. Filippos doet het operationeel beheer van Windpark Nijmegen-Betuwe.
